Clydesdale Horse
The Gentle Giant
Powerful, gentle, and impossible to miss, Clydesdales have been part of Willowbank since the very beginning.
With their feathered legs and calm nature, they once helped around the reserve, pulling wagons you can still spot in the Farmyard today.
A true icon, they bring strength, beauty, and a touch of living heritage to the park.
Clydesdale Horse Facts
Scotland
Clydesdales originated in the Clyde Valley of Scotland, where they were developed in the 18th century as hardworking farm horses.
Grasslands & Pastures
Today, they are found on farms, in show rings, and in working roles around the world. They thrive in open pasture with shelter and regular care.
Herbivores
Clydesdale horses are herbivores and eat pasture grass, hay. grains and fresh water. Because of their size, they require significantly more feed than lighter horse breeds.
Gentle
Known as true “gentle giants,” Clydesdales are calm, social, and eager to please. Intelligent and easy to work with, they may be big in size but are known for their kind, curious, and affectionate nature.
163-183 cm
Adults typically stand 16–18 hands high (163–183 cm at the shoulder) and weigh 700–1,000 kg. Their long white “feathers” around the lower legs are a distinctive feature.
20-25 years
With proper care, Clydesdales can live 20–25 years, maintaining their strength and calm demeanour throughout their life.
Not at Risk
While not endangered, Clydesdales are considered a heritage breed, and preserving them helps maintain traditional farm horse lines.
