Europe

Fallow deer are native to Europe but have been introduced to many parts of the world, including New Zealand, North America, and Australia. They thrive in woodlands, grasslands, and parklands, often seen grazing quietly in herds.

Habitat

Woodlands

Living in woodlands, open grasslands, and parklands, Fallowdeer prefer areas with a mix of trees for shelter and open spaces for grazing, allowing them to stay alert while feeding and resting.

Diet

Herbivores

Herbivores, feeding mainly on grasses, leaves, shoots, and fruits, they graze throughout the day and browse shrubs to supplement their diet, adjusting their feeding habits to the seasons and available vegetation.

Behaviour

Social and Alert

Fallow deer are social and alert, often seen in small herds. They are most active during dawn and dusk, moving quietly through woodlands and grasslands, grazing, browsing, and keeping watch for predators.

Size

90–170 cm

Medium sized deer, with adults measuring about 90–170 cm in length and weighing between 60–100 kg. Males are generally larger than females and develop broad, palm-shaped antlers.

Life Span

8-12 years

Typically living 8–12 years in the wild, with some individuals reaching up to 16 years in protected environments.

Conservation Status

Least Concern

Fallow deer are classified as Least Concern globally. Populations are stable in many introduced areas, though local management may be needed to maintain balance in parks, reserves, and farmland.
